Questions & Answers

How do I obtain SR22 Insurance in Hawaii?

An SR22 is also called a financial responsibility form.  If you need an SR22, it’s usually because your license was suspended.  If you own a car, in order to get your license back you need to purchase an owner’s policy with the scheduled vehicle.  Make sure you mention you need an SR22 as there is usually a fee.  If you do not own a vehicle, but would like to get your driver’s license back, you can purchase a named operator’s policy with an SR22.  It is important to have your case number with you.  Once you receive the SR22 you can take it to the DMV to get your license back, or you can request the insurance company or agency mail it for you.  Carr’s Insurance can provide SR22 insurance on all islands including Hawaii, Oahu, Maui and Kauai.

What is an SR21 and why do I need one?

An SR21, also known as a AAMVA Uniform Financial Responsibility form, can be requested by the financial responsibility division of Hawaii’s DMV.  If you need one it’s usually because you were involved in an accident and it was not documented that you had a valid insurance ID card.  An SR-21 can be issued by your insurance company either directly to you, or mailed to the DMV on all islands including Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.

I’ve pulled my abstract and am considered a high risk driver in Hawaii, can you insure me?

Carr’s Insurance Agency specializes in finding reasonable plans for high risk drivers.  We can usually offer a variety of payment plans for your policy to make it easier to obtain auto or motorcycle insurance coverage in Hawaii.

I’m in the military and have just transferred to Hawaii from the continental United States; can I just transfer my insurance to Honolulu?

Unfortunately, no.  Every state has different insurance laws and have specified limits of liability.  Also, Hawaii’s law mandates that you obtain insurance coverage from an agent or company licensed in Hawaii.  We can assist you in establishing a new policy with us and canceling your previous policy smoothly.  And if you need answers to questions about titling or registering your vehicle we can assist you with that as well.

What does it mean that Hawaii is a No-Fault Insurance state?

Calling Hawaii a No-Fault insurance state is a reference to the type of coverage you are required by law to carry in this state.  Hawaii, unlike many other states, has a law requiring you purchase a Personal Injury Protection limit of $10,000.  Subject to the limits of liability, if you pay a premium for personal injury protection coverage (PIP) we will pay on behalf of an insured person to health care providers such amounts as are provided as personal injury protection benefits for bodily injury sustained by the insured person in an accident arising out of the operation, maintenance, or use of a motor vehicle.

I bought a motorcycle and have my permit; can Carr’s insurance provide me with a policy?

Hawaii State law requires that in order for you to insure your motorcycle you must have a motorcycle license or a motorcycle permit and provide proof of enrollment in a Hawaii DOT approved Motorcycle Safety Course.  If you have your permit we can provide you with the enrollment forms for the Motorcycle Safety course at our office.

I have a custom manufactured motorcycle (Like a big dog, Hawaiian Hog, Titan,  Iron Horse, Johnny Pag, or Jim Nasi) can Carr’s Insurance provide me with a full coverage policy?

The typical answer is Yes, but please call our office as the approved custom bikes list is always expanding.

One of the reasons why it’s difficult to find companies that offer full coverage on many of these motorcycles is because until a manufacturer is listed in the NADA or Kelley Blue Book an insurance company has no way to determine what to pay out in the case of a claim.  Carr’s Insurance Agency has been working closely with various insurance companies to provide riders with custom manufactured motorcycles more options and avenues in which to insure their bikes.  If you don’t see your motorcycle listed above, please contact us!
